USC hosts IERC 2006

After the huge success of the 1st International Engineering Research Conference (IERC 2005) held in March 2005, USC is again proud to host the 2nd International Engineering Research Conference (IERC 2006) on March 9-10, 2006.

This year’s theme “Evolving Technologies for Sustainable Development” is an appropriate premise for the convergence of engineers, innovators and researchers from around the world.

This is an ideal forum for sharing new ideas and learning new developments in the fields of chemical, computer, electrical, electronics and communications, civil, mechanical and industrial engineering.

The IERC 2006 is supported by the Philippines' Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). For more information, please check the IERC 2006 website . The tentative conference program will be posted soon.

Recognition of CE board passers

For the third year in a row, the USC CE department has been producing board exam topnotchers.  Last November 2005, Engr. Joseph Petalcorin took the #7 spot.  Together with the rest of the passers from the May and November 2005 exams, the CE department held its annual Thanksgiving Mass and Recognition of Board Passers at the Rigney Hall, Talamban Campus.  The invited guest speaker was Dr. Pericles Dakay, who ardently motivated the new engineers, as well as the rest of the CE students present, to engage seriously on their careers and be confident in finding their niche in a host of civil engineering opportunities.  Present also were the CE faculty members and the college dean, Dr. Nicanor Buenconsejo Jr, who also gave the Opening Remarks.  The event ended with a free lunch.

CED welcomes our new faculty member!

Another addition to the roster of faculty members of the civil engineering department this semester comes in the person of Engr. Xavier Veloso.  Engr. Veloso finished his BSCE degree in 2002 at the University of San Carlos with a cum laude merit on his name.  Just this March 2005, he successfully completed the CED two-year Masters of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) graduate program with specialization in Water Resources and Environment.

Engr. Calo is the new EM coordinator

Engr. Erwin Calo was earlier appointed to head the Engineering Mathematics (EM) section this academic year.   As a head, he is responsible for the coordination of all EM schedules and other activities such as the planning of departmental examinations and the crediting of subjects.  The section being under the Office of the Dean, now has a new office at the 4th floor of the Engineering building formerly occupied by the College of Architecture and Fine Arts.

Masters of Engineering no more

The Masters of Engineering program of USC is now more specialized as the university introduced the concept of verticalization.  This semester, the civil engineering graduate students carry the degree of Masters of Civil Engineering (MCE) as a replacement for the degree MEng.  Students have to choose between two options for specialization upon enrollment:

1.Water Resources and Environment

2. Structural and Geotechnical

Most of the students enrolled this semester are into the second option.  It is however seen that the number of enrollees for both fields would increase in the coming year due to this verticalization strategy.  Classes are offered in the evening to accommodate part-time students.
